A short overnight’s cruise east of Monaco, the Italian Riviera, renowned for its particularly mild climate and relaxed way of life which, together with the charm of its old fishing ports and the beauty of its landscape, has made it a popular destination for travellers and tourists since the time of Byron and Shelley. There are some great hiking trails through the Cinque Terre (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the steep, rugged hillsides are home to some lovely little towns, some of which cannot be reached by road. The area is famous for its wonderful food and excellent wines and where better to enjoy both than a café terrace in Portofino? — Alicia Ewing, Charter Broker
There are few better places to begin an Italian Riviera yacht charter than in Liguria’s capital city Genoa. Walk the cobblestone streets filled with art, history, music and architecture and you’ll see why Genoa was named the European Capital of Culture for 2004. In 2006, the city was added to the World Heritage List. Via Garibaldi is home to the grandeur palaces Palazzo Rosso, Palazzo Bianco and Cattaneo Adorno Palace, now all museums encapsulating the riches of antiquity. Find treasures of your own at the designer stores and couture boutiques of Via Luccoli and Via XX Settembre.
The idyllic fishing village of Portofino is a popular stop during an Italian Riviera yacht charter. A photographer’s dream, this little city is the zenith of beauty. A meal in Puny restaurant emphasizes Portifino's charm. Aside from its pop culture allure — Richard Burton proposed to Elizabeth Taylor while overlooking the harbor at Puny — the cuisine will bring you back. The papperdelle al Portofino, which blends tomato and pesto flavors, will give you a true taste of Liguria.
Further south find Cinque Terre. The enchanting “Five Lands,” comprises the adjacent towns of Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore, each boasting its own unique personality. If you’re up for an adventure during your Italian Riviera yacht charter, hike the “Five Lands.” Trails lead through the hills and peaks, showcasing stunning botanical gardens, olive orchards and views of the sparkling summer sea teeming below. Fall in love as you amble along Via dell’ Amore, an easy 25-minute walk between Riomaggiore and Monterosso. A sunset cruise on board the luxury yacht past Vernazza, one of the most striking of the lands, will offer scenes straight out of an Italian romance film.
