 Majestic, mountainous views

Montenegro's verdant mountains plunge dramatically into the sea and the winding coastline reveals numerous pretty coves and fortified medieval villages. It is impossible not be impressed with the stunning scenery and the sense of timelessness. There is plenty to do, from sightseeing and water sports, to sampling local cuisine and hiking the hillside trails. But my favorite thing is to sit on deck and watch the last of the light shimmer on the water as the sun sets majestically behind the mountains. — Fiona Maureso, Charter Broker

Quickly rising as the toast of the Eastern Mediterranean, Montenegro is a spectacular choice for a luxury yacht charter location. Dubbed “pearl of the Mediterranean,” this country’s stunning landscape beckons as forested mountains give way to deep ravines and old world towns are nestled on hillsides.

Often Montenegro yacht charters are combined with visits to neighboring Croatia, due to their proximity. Explore the impossibly picturesque Bay of Kotor, known locally as Boka, and climb the city’s ancient walls. This Medieval town was fortified with castles, bastions and other relics from antiquity. Visit the St. John Castle for an incredible view of the entire bay. The summer season is busy at luxury marinas such as Porto Montenegro, and the Bay of Kotor has become and up-and-coming playground for the yachting elite. Luxury hotels and restaurants are cropping up in this old-world city offering an incredible juxtaposition of cobblestone streets and high-end facilities.

The small, lovely islet of Sveti Stefan was once merely a village within a fortress, but today is one of Montenegro’s leading exclusive resorts. Dating back to the fifteenth century, there is a quaint atmosphere as you meander the stone streets of this ancient citadel. Lined with olive trees and encapsulated by a pine and cedar forest, you could not find a better place to relax than at the Aman Spa on the islet. Be sure to add this to your Montenegro yacht charter itinerary.

Further north is Budva; known as the Budva Riviera, visit one of the incredible pebble beaches. During a Montenegro yacht charter stop in, Old Town, Stari Grad, for a visit. There are many churches and ancient ruins to visit. When the sun sets on this olden town, the evenings heat up. Before heading out on the town, visit a local restaurant, such as Konoba Stari Grad to sample the native cuisine. Fish dishes are popular, and be sure to have a peek at the local wine selection.
