In 1867, the “unsinkable” British Royal Mail Ship RHONE was caught in a hurricane between Peter and Salt Island in the British Virgin Islands, foundered and sank. The wreck of the RMS RHONE now lies beneath the waters of Black Point Rock. The eastern selection of Virgin Islands remains British territory while the western islands for the Virgin Islands of the United States. St. Croix, St. John and St. Thomas are all found in the west under United States rule.
