Hi, I’m David Michie, a Yacht Broker at Northrop & Johnson. After 24 years as a broker with MarineMax, I’m excited to begin a new chapter with N&J. I’ve had a great career over the past two-plus decades, and joining Northrop & Johnson gives me the opportunity to build on that experience while moving into the larger-yacht market and taking my career to the next level.
What I’ve always enjoyed most about being a broker is being part of a client’s experience on the water. Whether it’s seeing families enjoy their boat together or hearing that an owner has won a fishing tournament aboard their new Sportfish, those moments are what make the job so rewarding. Being able to share in that excitement and see where each client’s journey takes them is one of the best parts of what I do.
My Past
I’ve been around boats for as long as I can remember. I got my first boat when I was eight years old, a 10-foot aluminum Starcraft, and grew up spending time on the water in southwest Florida. Because of that, I’ve always understood the excitement that comes with boating and the memories it can create. Whether someone owns a boat for years or spends a week aboard a charter yacht, time on the water can become one of the experiences they remember most.
Before entering the marine industry, I played college golf at Northwood University and spent nine years working in the golf business for FILA, Maxfli and Spalding. My move into yacht brokerage came after my dad’s best friend purchased a 41-foot Sea Ray and described the experience of buying the boat and working with his broker. The idea immediately clicked with me. Next thing I know, I receive a call from MarineMax, learned more about the company and its culture, and was hooked.
That opportunity became a 24-year career with MarineMax. Over that time, I built my business around long-term client relationships and gained extensive experience helping people buy and sell boats and yachts.
My Future
Joining Northrop & Johnson is an opportunity for me to broaden both the yachts I work with and the clients I meet. After spending much of my career working within my community and building a strong network, I’m looking forward to branching out, connecting with a wider circle of clients and continuing to grow in the larger-yacht market.
My Motto
Treat people the way you want to be treated
My Outside-Office Life
My wife and I have been married for 17 years, and we have a 14-year-old daughter. As a family, we attend Grow Church and are members of Naples Yacht Club & LaPlaya Golf Club. I’m also an active golfer, playing in tournaments and participating with the Florida State Golf Association. When I’m not working or golfing, you’ll usually find me boating and spending time on the water.
