SEA ISLAND REOPENS THE RENOVATED PLANTATION COURSE

Posted October 22, 2019 in Travel by Morgan Crowe

Over the past 12 months, Sea Island has invested millions of dollars to enhance and update the legendary course that sits in an enviable position on the Atlantic Coast. The nearly year-long renovation project was managed by golf legends Mark and Davis Love III of Love Golf Design. The brothers had a personal interest in the course, having learned to play golf on the championship golf course as young boys. Their enthusiasm is evident throughout the stunning re-designs and new areas where they drew on the history of the course, using classical architectural features and historical hardscape and landscape elements. Additions include an all-new 17,000-square-foot Golf Performance Center, six cottages, an 18-hole putting course, a pool and pool house, extended practice facility and short game area, all boasting stunning ocean views. The course renovations include new and interesting strategic elements that retain the course’s character and routing, passed on by previous architects, beginning with Walter Travis’ original 1928 design of the golf club’s first nine holes.

The renovated Plantation Course is a welcome addition to the famous Sea Island resort, which comprises five miles of private beach, a beach club, tennis center, yacht club, shooting school and three championship golf courses, including the Seaside Course, Retreat Course and the all-new Plantation Course.
