Queen of the Nile

Abellán New York often creates only a limited number of each piece of jewelry, adding to the prestige. Depending on the materials used, the structural complexity and the high level of quality control by the designer, an individual piece by Abellán New York can take as long as nine months to be created.

“It is my passion to create colorful jeweled sculptures to wear,” says Abellán. “I hand select rare gemstones with a special spark inherent in them. They in turn inspire me to conceive of jewels in a provocative way. Planning the type of cut for the stones and the color combinations to use are challenges; it can be risky to use stones in an unexpected way. My jewelry does not comprise the more typical platinum, gold and gemstones…I think of [my jewelry] as ‘painted’ with gemstones. For me, the stones make the jewelry something that is alive; it is a way of making my dreams come true.”

One of the most impressive pieces of the latest Abellán New York collection is the Queen of the Nile necklace. Abellán drew influences from Egyptian broadcollars and the glamour of 1940s Hollywood to create this unique coral necklace. Set in an antique style, emeralds and diamonds contrast beautifully with the semi-precious pink tourmaline and graduated amethysts are juxtaposed, creating a color-block façade. An elegant black South Sea pearl at the closure is an added element of luxury. The necklace is 20.5-inches long.

The Abellán New York collection is available for viewing by private appointment in New York or Miami. Abellán New York’s handcrafted pieces also will be showcased at the invitation-only salon at Moda Operandi during the London Fashion Week in September 2015.
