There is a natural affinity between whisky and the sea: both are shaped by time, place and the journeys that connect distant shores. With Carta Nautica, The Macallan explores that relationship through a collection inspired by the transatlantic passage of the oak at the heart of its whisky making.

Taking its name from the Spanish term for “nautical chart,” Carta Nautica traces a route from North America to Jerez de la Frontera and onward to Scotland. Along the way, geography becomes part of the whisky’s story.

At the heart of the collection is The Macallan Carta Nautica Distilled in 1987, the first in a new series of vintage releases. Distilled in 1987 and matured for more than 38 years, the single malt began its journey in sherry-seasoned oak casks from Jerez de la Frontera before being transferred into casks that previously held bourbon from North America—an unconventional maturation shaped by different continents, traditions and climates.

Bottled at 45.2% ABV, the 1987 expression reveals creamy vanilla and caramelized peach alongside antique oak and subtle floral notes. Nectarine, charred pineapple and soft leather emerge on the palate, followed by a long finish of wood spice and sultanas.

The maritime narrative extends to its presentation through artwork by American artist Amy Genser, whose organic compositions take inspiration from the natural forms and rhythms of the ocean.

Here, the voyage is more than a metaphor. Carta Nautica reflects the idea that character can be shaped not only by origin or destination, but by everything encountered along the way.
