Posted March 2, 2021 in Company by Janine St.Denis

Northrop & Johnson spotlights Senior Charter Manager Adam Fitzmaurice. Adam is an accomplished charter manager specializing in yachts over 50 meters. His years in the industry and first-hand experience onboard as crew enable him to provide valuable insight to both owners and captains.

How did you get into the yachting industry and what led you to where you are today?

I moved to Antigua in the late ’90s and had my first experience of yachting and superyachts. After many years of running one of the island’s most established restaurants and bars – Abracadabra – I left the island to work on yachts full time. The move to a land-based yachting role was one I jumped at when the time was right.

What do you think makes N&J special?

I think it’s the unique balance of innovation, excellence yet a true family spirit. We care about the people we work for and with…and we love yachting!

What do you like most about your job?

Every day brings new challenges, obstacles to overcome and situations to mediate. I love dealing with owners, brokers and crew. It keeps me grounded and reminds me where I came from.

What accomplishment at N&J makes you most proud?

I think watching the Charter Management Department grow and flourish has been special. We have an incredible team here, and one that I know will continue to make waves in the industry!

What is your favorite cruising destination and why?

I’ve been lucky enough to visit many parts of the world as crew. Diving in the Maldives, exploring the Caribbean, island hopping through the Cyclades but there’s something truly special about the culture and history on the Côte d’Azur.

If you had a yacht what type of yacht would you have?

Tough question! I love classic sailboats such as the J-Class Yachts, but I think a touch more creature comforts might be more up my street these days. Maybe a modern explorer yacht such as ANDROMEDA (ex-ULYSSES) wouldn’t be so bad.

If you had a yacht where would you spend the most time aboard?

What’s your favorite activity you enjoy with friends/family?

I love food and family time. A beach barbecue with friends and family is my idea of the perfect day.

What is one tip for first-time clients?

Find a broker you trust and then listen. There is so much real-life experience and information that can be vital when planning a charter such as knowing which months the wind blows in a certain direction, or the tidal movement in an area can be the difference between a trip of a lifetime or not.

Any additional information you would like to share?

There are many things in life that we can control, negotiate, manipulate…but ‘time’ is not one of them. Time spent on the water with friends and family, experiencing the wonders that the oceans can show us, will be some of your best spent of this most precious commodity.
