The 2022 Rolex Middle Sea Race is set to officially kick off on Saturday, October 22. But leading up to the race are a variety of exciting events, including a coastal race, a crew party and more. This year’s 43rd edition of the event is gearing up to be one of the best yet. And the list of entries is growing. Currently, 88 yachts are registered, representing 24 nations from around the world. This list is 28 yachts longer than earlier in the year and there are still a few weeks until the close of registration, which officially ends on September 23, but the Royal Malta Yacht Club will accept discretionary late entries as late as Friday, September 30.

The nation with the largest participation is the country of Italy, with a total of 18 yachts. France comes in second place with 13 yachts and Malta, the race’s host country, has eight yachts, with more potential additions coming soon. The race fleet will be filled with everything from maxi multi-hull yachts to maxi mono-hull yachts, fully crewed craft and double handers. This contingent of cruisers is certainty a unique one.

The first Rolex Middle Sea Race took place in 1968 and since then, nine times Maltese yachts have stood in the award’s circle. Most recent Maltese winners took home top honors in 2020 and 2021 aboard Elusive II. This year’s fleet of local yachts is looking quite strong. There are high hopes that the locals will take the title for a three-peat.

The race will begin in Malta’s stunning Grand Harbour and the series of starts all can be watched from Valletta’s fortifications. The whole event will culminate on Saturday, October 29 with a prize-giving ceremony when the winners will be announced.
