NOJO Spotlight: Yacht Broker Jaap Havenga

In this week’s NoJo Spotlight, we spotlight Yacht Broker Jaap Havenga. Jaap has spent the last two decades at various companies within the yachting industry; most recently with the Nautor’s Swan Brokerage. Now with Northrop & Johnson, Jaap is delighted to continue assisting his clients with purchasing and selling brokerage yachts. His dedication and industry knowledge make him an asset to the Palma team.

How did you get into the yachting industry and what led you to where you are today?

I have been dinghy sailing since childhood and got into the brokerage business in 1993. I started with De Valk Yachtbrokers (in Palma) where I worked almost 16 years, then five years with C&N and five years with Nautor’s Swan brokerage.

What do you think makes N&J special?

I think N&J has very good market insight, a nice team to work with and the company has very good marketing tools.

What do you like most about your job?

When I close a sale with all parties involved satisfied.

What is your favorite cruising destination and why?

The Balearic Islands, a great place for cruising, with good marinas, and infrastructure.

If you had a yacht what type of yacht would you have?

A performance cruising sailing yacht around 40-45 ft.

If you had a yacht where would you spend the most time aboard?

For sure that will be in Mallorca.

What’s your favorite activity you enjoy with friends/family?

Going out on a boat together with my family.

What is one fun/unique fact about yourself?

Good knowledge about yachts in general (I have a diploma in naval architecture) and their market value.

What is one tip for first-time clients?

Buy a boat that fits your needs and that you feel confident you can manage.
