WHEN THE OWNER CHANGES PLANS
By Whitney Diedericks, Trident Program Manager, IGY Marinas
Every captain knows the call. The owner has decided to attend Art Basel in Miami this weekend and wants the yacht there. The passage may be straightforward, but securing a berth during one of the busiest weekends of the year is another matter entirely. Even the most carefully planned itinerary can change at short notice, whether due to an owner’s schedule, the weather or an unexpected request.
At popular destinations, particularly during major events, marina availability can become one of the most difficult aspects of the operation.
Planning for the unexpected
Consider Yacht Haven Grande Miami at Island Gardens during Art Basel. Berths may have been fully committed for weeks, leaving captains with limited options when a late request arrives.
IGY’s Trident membership program is designed to address precisely these situations, providing eligible members with guaranteed berth access at participating marinas, subject to the program’s terms, even during periods of high demand. The program also removes the requirement for a berth deposit.
For a captain working to accommodate an owner’s changing plans, having an established arrangement in place can remove a significant element of uncertainty.
More than a berth
The practical value of a marina relationship extends beyond dockage availability. Familiarity with the yacht, its requirements and the preferences of its owner and crew can make arrival arrangements more efficient.
Across the IGY network, Trident members receive preferential berth placement and assistance with shoreside requirements, including storage. Depending on the marina, additional arrangements may include assigned parking, access to designated restaurant or pool deck areas, and crew gatherings. These may appear to be small details, but when a yacht is operating to a demanding schedule, the ability to coordinate shoreside arrangements through a familiar marina team simplifies the logistics of an arrival.
Access during major events
The benefits can become particularly apparent during busy periods such as the Cannes Film Festival or the Miami Formula 1 Grand Prix. According to IGY, Trident members have secured last-minute berthing in Cannes, accessed VIP event arrangements and benefited from helicopter operations privileges. Members have also been accommodated in Miami when the marina was otherwise fully booked.
Availability and privileges vary between marinas, but the benefits of having an established relationship can extend well beyond securing a berth. For captains managing complex itineraries, the priority is always to retain as much flexibility as possible without compromising the owner’s experience. Having the right marina arrangements in place before plans change can make that task considerably easier.
Captain’s takeaway: When planning an itinerary around major events or high-demand destinations, establish berth arrangements and understand the options available if schedules change. Confirm any priority access, operational restrictions and additional shoreside requirements well in advance.
