New STCW Training Requirement for Violence & Harassment Prevention

A new mandatory STCW competence related to the prevention of and response to violence and harassment, including sexual harassment, bullying, and sexual assault, is being implemented across the maritime industry.

The requirement stems from IMO Resolution MSC.560(108) and has been adopted by the UK MCA through MGN 718 (M+F). Depending on the date of a crew member’s PSSR training and the certificates they hold, additional training may be required to maintain compliance.

The deadline for completion is 31 March 2027, and failure to comply could impact certificate revalidation and regulatory inspections.

Several flag administrations, including the Cayman Islands and Marshall Islands, are also incorporating the new requirements into their certification and documentation processes, with further guidance expected from other registries.
