Ion Crew Solutions is a crew assistance program founded by licensed mental health professional and former crew member Paulina Allen, focused on prevention and support to strengthen retention and onboard cohesion.
Yachting is a unique environment: a team doesn’t just work together, it lives together. With long hours, high expectations and limited personal space, wellbeing isn’t a “nice to have”, it’s a key part of how a vessel functions day to day.
Ion Crew Solutions is a forward-thinking crew assistance program created to improve the crew experience through mental health–focused interventions and prevention. Founded by Paulina Allen, a former crew member, captain’s wife and Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Ion Crew Solutions is built around a clear mission: improve yachting experience through specialized prevention measures that support crew retention and strengthen onboard cohesion.
Prevention is central to the program. Ion Crew Solutions provides pre-employment screening specifically tailored to the yachting industry, as well as onboard or virtual support for existing crew. In many industries, prevention is considered essential — and yachting should be no exception.
The screening process includes components especially relevant to the realities of life at sea, such as attachment style, emotional intelligence and problem-solving ability. This mental and emotional wellbeing model is particularly valuable in yachting because each yacht operates as its own system. Much like a family, every interaction onboard has a reciprocal impact, influencing the atmosphere and dynamics of the entire vessel.
When crew members feel supported, safe and cohesive, positive energy shapes the overall experience onboard. It extends upward through the captain and owner experience as well. Conversely, when tension arises, its effects can be felt throughout the boat, impacting on morale, quality of life and the safety of working at sea.
In addition to prevention services, Ion Crew Solutions also offers mental wellness coaching, psychotherapy, team-building workshops, conflict-resolution intervention and training, crisis support and consultation. The approach is grounded in cultural awareness and sensitivity: each team member is either former crew or has completed specialized training in yacht and maritime cultural competency. With cultural nuances playing such a significant role in how crew interact and respond to stress, this expertise is a critical part of delivering meaningful support onboard.
Ion Crew Solutions is not positioned as a traditional crew service. The mission goes beyond filling roles. It strengthens the human system onboard, prioritizing prevention, cohesion and long-term wellbeing. By supporting the people behind the operation, the goal is to help create vessels that don’t just function but truly thrive.
