THAILAND YACHT SHOW 2016 WRAP UP

Northrop & Johnson was in the panel of industry leaders regarding the discussion on the status of the superyacht charter licenses. The panel comprised government officials and marine industry members and was facilitated by the Thailand Yacht Show. Northrop and Johnson Charter Manager and Retail Charter broker Lies Sol expressed her concern that many yacht owners are already having to make the decision of whether or not to send their boats to Asia for next season. She asked, “Could you give us a timeline as to when the legal aspects of revenue and crew visas will be decided upon?” noting that preparations need to be underway by charter brokers handling bookings for next season. The Thai government was very positive throughout the panel and the duration of the show. There are hopes that any issues will soon be resolved.

The show itself very much was “business as usual” with dealers and brokers unanimously expressing satisfaction with the way the event is unfolding. Thailand Yacht Show Managing Director Andy Treadwell, who also manages the Singapore Yacht Show, said, “The Thailand Yacht Show is all about visibility, not only locally, but also internationally.” Ao Po Marina had the facilities to display much larger yachts than was possible at previous industry events in the area. In the future, superyachts of 100 meters will be able to display.

Northrop & Johnson was thrilled with the success of the first edition of the Thailand Yacht Show. This was the first of many more successful Thailand Yacht Shows, a kick-start for desired Thai cruising grounds, the arrival of affluent visitors and a growing fleet of charter yachts and boats.
