MUSTANG is an 83' sailing yacht with a reputation established in ports around the world. Originally commissioned by an experienced American yachtsman, she is based on Doug Peterson’s well-known Ocean 80 performance hull, built by Southern Ocean Shipyard. The hull was extended by three feet to accommodate a large lazarette before she was sent to Camper & Nicholsons Shipyard. Her construction combines a fiberglass (GRP) hull and superstructure, solid laminate below the waterline, and fiberglass with an end-balsa core from three inches above the waterline to below the cap rail. Teak decks are laid over fiberglass with a balsa core.
A standout feature is MUSTANG’s fully enclosed pilothouse, which serves as both a helm station and lounge and opens directly to the spacious lower salon. Full yacht operations can be managed from the pilothouse, while the exterior helm allows one person to control the steering, furlers and primary sail trim. Although accommodations are provided for up to three crew, she can be sailed by two or three people, making her well suited to shorthanded cruising. On deck, a spacious, protected cockpit is followed by the steering cockpit aft, with additional social areas possible on the aft deck and foredeck.
Significant refit work has addressed her sailing systems, deck equipment and machinery. The 2007 in-mast furling rig was removed during the 2018/2019 refit for a complete refurbishment and repaint, while the standing and running rigging, including the rod standing rigging, were replaced. Four new sails were added in December 2020. The same refit included a full yacht repaint, new decks, winches, deck hardware and hatches, plus updated electronics and galley equipment. The small generator was replaced in 2018, followed by the main engine and larger generator in 2021. Exterior varnish was stripped and rebuilt, while interior renovations included replacement soft furnishings.
Further maintenance was completed during MUSTANG’s August 2022 annual haul-out, when the bottom was painted, the rudder removed and serviced, zincs replaced, and the thru-hulls and underwater equipment checked.
Below deck, six guests are accommodated in three aft staterooms, each with an en-suite head, while two forward cabins and a head accommodate up to three crew. The master has a centerline queen berth, settees on both sides, extensive storage and a port settee that converts into a six-foot sea berth. The port guest cabin has a full-size berth and en-suite that can also function as the day head, while the starboard cabin has twin berths, an en-suite, washer/dryer and one of the engine-room access points. Throughout, classic teak detailing, porthole and hatch shades and curtains, multiple lighting options and quality furnishings give the interior its traditional character.
MUSTANG brings together ocean-racing performance origins, modern systems, shallow draft, a true pilothouse/deck salon and a classic teak interior. She has completed four circumnavigations and offers worldwide cruising capability with a shorthanded crew.
