Seafood is a staple of the Aeolian Islands. Dine ashore to enjoy a selection of locally caught fish and exceptional, and delicious, local wines such as Malvasia delle Lipari.
Comprising eight islands including Liprai, the largest, Vulcano, Salina, Stromboli, Filicudi, Alicudi, Panarea and Basiluzzo, these islands formed approximately 260,000 years ago in the middle of the Tyrrhenian Sea by the hands of two volcanoes — Stromboli and Vulcano. The Aeolian Islands are defined as a volcanic arc, and both Stromboli and Vulcano are still active today.
The charismatic and craggy coastline of Lipari is a sight to be seen during an Aeolian Islands yacht charter. Visit the pumice-stone beaches, and do not miss the trek up to Mount Chirica, from which you can take in stunning views of all of the other islands. Before heading back to the yacht for the evening, stop at one of the favorite local haunts, such as Bar Chitarra, for a cocktail and live music.
Vulcano’s activity means a surplus of seismic action on the island. Spend an afternoon in at Laghet to di Fanghi, a popular mud bath, then rinse off in the spring-feed, natural-Jacuzzi sea. Many claim these locales have mystical healing properties.
Nicknamed the “Lighthouse of the Mediterranean,” Stromboli is still erupting. The Sciara del Fuoco, or Stream of Fire, is a significant and stunning geological feature of the volcano. With three active craters at its peak, there is much action to uncover. An afternoon on the black lava sand beaches of Stromboli is not to be missed during an Aeolian Islands yacht charter. While there’s plenty to see above the waterline, what teems below in the crystalline waters is definitely a delight to any diver. Don the vessel’s scuba kit and discover some of the incredible diving at Strombolicchio or Secca di sirocco.
