We're a very close group at Northrop & Johnson—you can tell by our relationships.

Many of today's yacht brokerage firms make the public relations claim to be an "industry leader". Industry leadership however, involves far more than simply selling the most "units". Leadership begins with commitment to our regional, national and international brokerage associations, which create and legislate the business practices, ethics and contractual documents that define how our business is conducted. In this context, since 1949, when Jim Northrop and George Johnson founded the firm, no other firm can rival the record of N&J. Northrop & Johnson was also the training ground for many of the industry's most influential brokers. Bruce Brakenhoff and Joe Bartram both worked with George Johnson in the New York office of Northrop & Johnson in the 1960's.

A brief chronology:

Yacht Architects and Brokers Association (YABA):

YABA (now Yacht Brokers Association of America YBAA) was the original yacht brokerage association in the United States. Past Presidents: Jim Northrop (1961-63), Skip Mansfield (1968-70), Bob Leslie, N&J Boston (1991-93), Hank Halsted, N&J Newport (1993-95), Brian Commette, N&J Newport (2001-03). In addition, N&J brokers have populated the Board of Directors of the Association consistently since the 1980's and at many times in previous years.

During his tenure as President, Brian Commette launched the Certified Professional Yacht Broker Program (CPYB), which culminates in an exacting examination on all aspects of yacht brokerage, from ethics to international law, contracts, registration and documentation requirements and all other aspects of the profession.

Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association (MYBA):

Kees Van Vliet, Owner of Northrop and Johnson, Nice, through 2007, was a founding member of MYBA in 1986 . Kees served as President of MYBA forover a decade, until 2002.

Florida Yacht Brokers Association (FYBA):

Kevin Merrigan served on the Board of Directors of FYBA from 1996 - 2005. He was a driving force behind the fiscal responsibity of the organization as it experienced rapid growth during the late 1990's and early 2000's.

American Yacht Charter Association (AYCA):

Carolyn Titus was a founding member of the American Charter Association in 1986. Missy Johnston served as President of the AYCA from 2001 - 2003. Missy served on the Board of Directors for over a dozen years.

International Yacht Council (IYC):

Hank Halsted, Kevin Merrigan and Brian Commette were founding members of the International Yacht Council in 2000. This was conceived as an Association of National and Regional Yacht Brokerage Associations from around the world. Member Associations subscribed from California and the Pacific Northwest, YBAA, FYBA, MYBA, and YBDSA, the British Association of yacht brokers, designers and surveyors. Essentially, this association was intended to splice together the entire world of yacht brokerage. The vehicle for maintaining unity was the Yachtcouncil.com and Yachtcouncil.org MLS databases, which remain the authoritative professional references.

At inception, Brian Commette wrote the By Laws for the Association and Hank Halsted created the first operating budget.

Asia Pacific Superyacht Association (APSA):

Northrop and Johnson's Simon A Turner is a Founding Member and Director of the Asia Pacific Superyacht Association which was formed in 2011 to promote the Asia-Pacific region as the world's next great superyacht cruising destination. APSA already has members, both from the trade and superyacht owners, from all over the world and is working hard to promote the region to visiting yachts and to improve infrastructure and regulations within the region. APSA is a one stop shop for superyachts wishing to visit the Asia-Pacific. www.apsuperyacht.org/
